TOPIC: Leaving All (Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time)
SCRIPTURE: …they left everything and followed him. – Luke 5:11
About eight years ago, a visiting priest from India offered a reflection at our parish Sunday Mass. When Father Samuel lauded Simon Peter for leaving everything to follow Jesus, some congregants chuckled. I was one of them. “Everything?” I thought to myself. “Wasn’t everything nothing more than fishing nets and a boat?”

Then Father Samuel asked, “How many of you would abandon your livelihood to follow someone you did not really know through and through?” A hush fell over us all as Father made his salient point.
What happened on a shore hundreds of years ago is a witness to what can happen when we radically let go and follow Jesus. We do not need a miracle first or even a road to show the way, for Jesus holds our hand and directs our path. To walk in faith unencumbered is enough. – Sr. Bridget Haase O.S.U.
